NullPointerException is an EP that combines the concept of ‘Null’ used in computer science and the concept of ‘nothingness’ in art. The six-track long tracklist continues the process of creating and dismantling the structure of nothingness. Lacking symbolism and metaphor, the sound constitutes only a framework with no function outside of music. The moment the listener imagines and substitutes the artist's intention into the empty space excluding the framework, they encounter an error.

NullPointerException is developed based on ‘Micro Sound’ and pure electronic piano sound. The short and minimal sound makes up a set like a trio or a quartet and takes on a frame-like composition through the improvisation of melody, harmony, and sound as if one
song is connected to another. The development of this frame-like composition was inspired by the concept of ‘Null’ and Kundera’s novel ‘L’insoutenable légèreté de l’êtr (The Unbearable Lightness of Being)'. Within the concept of ‘Null’ that creates empty space,
the fragments of the songs, like characters in the novel, are split non-linearly and continue from song to song as if they are passing by without a consistent theme.

The visualizers that list songs as images all represent geometry, shapes, and structures. Through a programming algorithm that creates and dismantles space, the structure of nothingness is expressed as an image, stimulating the listener's visual and auditory senses at the same time.

Ultimately, the EP is about expressing the aesthetics of the structure of nothingness. Null refers to an empty space where no function exists. Ultimately, the act of trying to take something out of empty space is a contradiction in itself. To interpret this meaningless EP, listeners need various clues. The titles of the songs are numbers ‘one, two, three, four, five’ replaced with ciphers, or simply 404, a web error code that cannot be found.

NullPointerException는 컴퓨터 과학에서 사용되는 ‘Null’이라는 개념과 예술의 ‘무’라는 개념을 접목한 EP이다. 6개의 수록곡은 무의 구조를 생성하고 해체하는 과정을 지속한다. 상징과 은유가 결여된 소리는 음악 외적인 기능이 존재하지 않는 뼈대만을 구성한다. 뼈대를 제외한 빈 공간에 작가의 의도를 상상하여 대입하는 순간 청자는 오류를 맞이한다.

NullPointerException는 ‘Micro Sound’와 퓨어한 일렉트로닉 피아노 사운드를 기반으로 전개된다. 짧고 미니멀한 사운드는 밴드의 트리오, 쿼텟과 같은 세트를 구성하며 하나의 곡이 다른 곡과 연결되는 듯 멜로디, 화성, 사운드의 즉흥성을 통해 액자식 구성을 취하고 있다. 이러한 액자식 구성의 전개는‘Null’의 개념과 쿤데라의 소설 ‘참을 수 없는 존재의 가벼움'에 영감을 받아 제작되었다. 빈 공간을 만들어 내는 ‘Null’의 개념 속에서 비선형적으로 쪼개져 있는 소설 속의 등장인물과 같은 곡의 파편들은 일관된 주제를 벗어나 스쳐 지나가는 듯 곡과 곡을 이어간다.

곡을 이미지로 나열한 비주얼라이저는 모두 기하학과 도형, 구조를 나타내는 모습을 취하고 있다. 공간을 생성하고 해체하는 프로그래밍 알고리즘을 통해무의 구조를 이미지로 표현하며 듣는 이의 시각과 청각을 동시에 자극한다.

이번 EP에서 표현하고자 하는 것은 결국 무의 구조에 대한 미학이다. 기능이 존재하지 않는 빈공간, 이를 지칭하는 Null. 결국 빈 공간에서 무언가를 꺼내려 하는 행위는 그 자체로 모순이다. 의미 없는 이 EP를 해석하기 위해 청자들은 갖가지 단서가 필요하다. 곡들의 제목은 암호로 치환된 ‘one, two, three, four, five’인 숫자이며 이름 자체를 찾을 수 없는 Web의 오류코드인 404일뿐이다.
